敝館近年先後傾力發布若干目錄,有「烽火山河-南渡與復興,民國三十五年至七十六年賢達遺墨、書冊暨文物目錄初編」、「悼念書冊集掇,上下集」、「王亮疇(寵惠)院長舊藏歷史文獻、文稿、證書暨信札目錄」、「唐天如孝廉珍藏乃父崇智公課業試卷、自撰文稿、朋交信札暨各類遺物疏記」,今復奉呈「東學西漸:三百年中西名家信札、著作暨文物目錄」。
目錄本乏辭采,披閱又感枯索,惟俯瞰全局,縱覽脈絡,目錄尤為勝任。況韶光荏苒,學海無涯,倘幸蒙天恩延壽三十寒暑,逐月兢業撰寫一人一事,亦僅得區區三百六十篇文字,豈足陳訴敝館所藏各類文物,闡證可歌可泣人事萬象。獨展讀目錄,頓悟梗概。今出「東學西漸:三百年中西名家信札,著作暨文物目錄」,相攜漫遊中西文化交映之境,參悟東學西漸三昧。
策展暨編輯室
盤古闢天地,人獸恆遷移。山川遙阻千萬年,乃塑殊異信仰、風俗、文字、語言。漸營無形文化,陶冶有形城邦。生靈本同根,相煎猶酷厲,故盛世末世相錯至天荒地老。泰西與中國,邂逅於何代,悠遠無從考,惟知自古商賈往返,闡拓航道陸路,至遁避世亂,卜居異域,恆河沙數。以文字首記東渡遊歷,推威尼斯馬可‧孛羅 (Marco Polo 1254-1324)。約至元十一年,西元一二七四年,孛羅初抵中土,參謁元世祖忽必烈汗。所撰見聞,出探險家之橐筆兼小說家之琦辭,泰西乃悉中國。是幻是真,議辯莫名,探證奇詭,誘蕩人心。

馬可‧孛羅肖像
後五、六甲子,明季清初,歐洲天主教傳教士陸續請纓赴華。傳教之熾愿,無慮航道之險叵,倘未魂斷颱風、浪濤、礁石、戾疫、海盜,克達中國,亦可命喪土匪、衙門、朝廷。九死一生,固非妄語。倦遊返歐,航道相等,危窘可知。昔啓航離歐,幾永訣親友,望波瀾際天,生死付神旨。東西隔硋,郵政蹇礙。據耶穌會文獻收藏家菲利普‧羅賓遜 (Philip Robinson) 云,明末之世,信函寄歐,長竟七年,澳門寄羅馬,尚有十七年事例。東渡教士皎皎者,咸持西方天文地理秘學,兼備大智大勇識見,方獲賞朝廷,寄寓京師,以科學作盾櫓,傳教為矢鏑。見諸史冊,尚得數人。

利瑪竇神父肖像
一五七七年,義大利籍耶穌會神父利瑪竇 (Matteo Ricci 1552-1610) 自里斯本啓航,後五年,一五八二年八月七日抵澳門,滯留中國二十八年。利瑪竇製「大瀛全圖」,編中葡字典,建中國首座教堂於北京宣武門,引領徐光啓入教等。

湯若望神父肖像
一六一八年,德國籍耶穌會神父湯若望 (Johann Adam Schall von Bell 1591-1666) 自葡萄牙啓航,後年餘,一六一九年七月十五日抵澳門,滯留中國四十七年。湯若望協修明崇禎曆,入清,順治年續修曆法,賜號通玄教師,據稱湯若望得帝批允傳教,集各地耶穌會教士之力,得五十萬信眾。

南懷仁神父肖像
一六五七年四月四日,比利時籍耶穌會神父南懷仁 (Ferdinand Verbiest 1623-1688) 自里斯本啓航,後年餘,一六五八年七月十七日抵澳門,滯留中國三十年。康熙年,南懷仁治曆法,監造紫禁城觀象臺儀器,授工部侍郎。
東渡傳教士多以澳門為中國首站,蓋一五五七年起,葡人每年獻金大明朝廷,據澳門為西方商埠。傳教士暫駐澳門,苦學中國語言風俗,再跋涉內陸各省。
西方宗教與科學東漸,中國哲學與文藝西漸,本可循環不息,惟三百餘年間,東漸西漸厚薄多寡至為懸殊。國人素聞「西學東漸」,寡聞「東學西漸」,後者隱約幽微之故。東學西漸萌生於傳教士信函與著作,馬可‧孛羅後二百餘年,泰西初始解悟中國。

一五八五年,西班牙籍奧斯定會修士胡安‧岡薩雷斯‧德‧門多薩 (Juan Gonzalez de Mendoza 1540-1618) 出版 「大中華帝國史」(Historia de las cosas mas notables, ritos y costumbres del gran reyno de la China)。

一六一五年,法國籍耶穌會傳教士金尼閣 (Nicolas Trigault 1577-1628) 出版「利瑪竇中國札記」 (De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas)。

一六六七年,德國籍耶穌會修士阿塔納奇歐斯‧基爾學 (Athanasius Kircher 1602-1680) 出版「中國圖說」 (China Illustrata)。

柏應理編纂「中國哲學家孔夫子」內頁
一六八七年,比利士籍耶穌會傳教士柏應理 (Philippe Couplet 1623-1693) 等合譯出版「中國哲學家孔夫子」 (Confucius Sinarum Philosophus),啓闡述儒學先聲。

杜赫德撰「中華帝國及所屬韃靼、朝鮮、西藏之地理、歷史、政治與外貌」扉頁
一七三五年,法國籍耶穌會修士杜赫德 (Jean-Baptiste Du Halde 1674-1743)出版「中華帝國及所屬韃靼、朝鮮、西藏之地理、歷史、政治與外貌」(Description Geographique, Historique, Chronologique, Politique, et Physique de l’Empire de La Chine et de La Tartarie Chinoises)。
以上著作盡出教士手筆。
儒家祭祖祭孔,引發清廷教廷爭端,史稱「禮儀之爭」。一七零四年,教宗克萊孟十一世 (Clement XI ) 布告教旨,嚴禁中國教徒祭祖祭孔,翌年派使赴華頒布禁令,康熙帝怒遣西使至澳門。一七二一年,康熙帝旨斥教廷,一七二四年,雍正帝旨禁天主教傳教。至十九世紀,教士乃假帝國軍艦礮火入華傳教。
俯瞰今時,中國西化,已趨其極。西方未見吸取中國哲學文藝涓滴,國人反自肆廢滅國故舊學。大陸之馬克思政治、簡體字,兩岸思想、宗教、建築、服飾、禮儀、文學、音樂、戲劇、繪畫,無一豁免西化。東學西漸之眇忽,東學中土之杳沉,尤令吾輩寘念三百年間東學越洋踐登歐美之中西人物,壯志篤行,獨辟蹊徑,淬厲今人於崖壁絕壑。東學未能茁壯根源,西漸花果,或能滋長他鄉。鄙集賦梅花館所藏,輯「東學西漸:三百年中西名家信札、著作暨文物目錄」,聊供別史補遺。

菲利普‧羅賓遜收藏拍賣目錄
讀菲利普‧羅賓遜收藏目錄,其晚明清初教士文物,已滙一代巨觀,後者難望項背,故鄙之目錄,未及於此。況鄙寡陋學淺,未識拉丁文、德文、法文,時之著作概不克讀,藏之反失義趣。鄙所編目錄雖以十八世紀為濫觴,實以十九、二十世紀為骨幹,英語已蛻變為西方首要語言。
「東學西漸:三百年中西名家信札、著作暨文物目錄」所謂「東學」,意涵盡求寬廣,非僅局限哲學、文學、藝術,更囊括政治、外交、軍事、經濟、宗教、社會、科學等範疇。綜合各部,索其奧蘊,方足洞悉一國。目錄所列一百九十六人,有政治家、外交家、軍事家、經濟學家、企業家、主教、神父、傳教士、佛教居士、漢學家、翻譯家、文學家、小說家、戲劇家、音樂家、藝術家、收藏家、影劇家、科學家、醫學家、探險家、考古學家、植物學家、記者、歷史見證人等。

威妥瑪手書信札首頁
目錄含蓋信札、著作與文物。所謂文物,即肖像、照片、插圖及他類。信札零箋,筆跡墨痕,猶能觸感後代,神交古人,心魂相應。珍異信札有威妥瑪 (Thomas Wade 1818-1895),翟里斯(Herbert Giles 1845-1935),高第(Henri Cordier 1849-1925),高羅佩 (Robert Hans van Gulik 1910-1967)等人之作。西賢信札可遇不可求,其因有二。寓居中國西賢,手澤多遭毀棄,罕得伯樂之故。國人對歷史早已漠然,安識西賢。況前清民初,國人鮮諳西語,遑論器重西賢,惜其手澤。寓居歐美西賢,手澤亦多毀棄,東學本非西土顯學,難遇賞音。西賢倘耄年返鄉,去國遙久,識者稀疏,手澤自靡。一函難求,當可解悟。

喜仁龍致利特爾菲爾德女士手書信札,便箋與信封等
目錄所載著作,多為作家簽名本。罕睹之簽名本有羅伯特‧福瓊 (Robert Fortune 1812-1880) 撰並簽署「浪跡中國北方三年,含茶、絲、綿產地,略述中國農業、園藝、植物等」,理雅各 (James Legge 1815-1897) 撰並簽署「西安府之景教流行碑」,巴克斯 (Edmund Backhouse 1873-1944) 撰並簽署「清宮的歷史與回憶」,喜仁龍 (Osvald Siren 1879-1966) 撰並簽署「喬托與弟子」等。簽名本有僅簽名字,或簽署數行兩種。鄙素許多字為佳,知文字荷載性靈。嘗聞西方藏書家偏好僅簽名字之書本,若非署贈名人,寧無上款,中西藏書家習好乖別。

亞瑟‧墨菲改譯「中國孤兒」倫敦演出戲單封面,一七五九年首演
十八世紀初,歐洲不乏哲學家崇尚中國儒家道德、政治、文化,如德籍哥特弗利德‧威廉‧萊布尼茲 (Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz 1646-1716),德籍克里斯蒂安‧沃爾夫 (Christian Wolff 1679-1754),法籍伏爾泰 (Voltaire 1694-1778) 等。歐洲乃興「中國風尚」,遍及建築與文藝。一七五五年八月,伏爾泰改編元朝紀君祥「趙氏孤兒」戲劇巴黎上演,易名「中國孤兒」,為西方首部中國歷史劇。一七五九年,英籍亞瑟‧墨菲(Arthur Murphy 1727-1801) 改譯為英語戲劇。本目錄輯伏爾泰「中國孤兒」巴黎首演戲單與亞瑟‧墨菲「中國孤兒」倫敦首演戲單,重遊兩都儒學鼎盛年華。十九世紀中葉,鴉片戰爭起,歐洲遂洞悉中國之佻弱,軍事之落伍,嚮慕之心轉易褻視之態,儒家道德、政治、文化憧憬為之破滅。

西方知悉中國,亦從政治、外交、軍事著作,見諸目錄。一八五一年至一八六四年,太平天國之亂撼動清廷根基,歐美報導極詳,美籍華爾將軍 (Frederick Townsend Ward 1831-1862),英籍戈登將軍 (Charles George Gordon 1833-1885) 先後率領常勝軍,名家撰寫多本傳記。一九零零年,八國聯軍占領北京,美籍丁韙良 (William Alexander Parsons Martin 1827-1916),英籍赫德 (Robert Hart 1835-1911) 記述見聞。

中華民國肇建,國父孫中山軍事顧問荷馬李(Homer Lea 1876-1912),作家卡爾‧格里克 (Carl Glick 1890-1971) 咸撰書記敘革命。民國二十六年十二月十三日,首都南京淪陷,日軍屠城。少數西士組南京安全區,庇護難民約二十五萬人。翌年,美國各雜誌先後報導南京大屠殺,尤據偷運出南京之紀錄影片與日記。目錄載列南京安全區委員會委員費吳生 (George Ashmore Fitch 1883-1979)、宋煦伯 (Hubert Lafayette Sone 1892-1970)、貝德士 (Miner Searle Bates 1897-1978)、史邁士 (Lewis Strong Casey Smythe 1901-1978) 四人手澤遺物。

國人外語著書,暢銷歐美,晚清有容閎 (1828-1912)、伍廷芳 (1842-1922)、陳季同 (1851-1907)、辜鴻銘 (1857-1928)。民國初年,影響一代之外語著作,當推一九二零年 國父孫中山先生(1866-1925)出版之「實業計劃」 (The International Development of China)。中華民國大陸時期外語作家有蔣夢麟(1886-1964)、董顯光(1887-1971)、蔣夫人宋美齡(1898-2003)、胡適之(1891-1962)、林語堂(1895-1976)等。

霍克斯教授致閔福德教授信札
目錄最後數人,列霍克斯教授 (David Hawkes 1923-2009) 、閔福德教授(John Minford)、李克曼教授(Pierre Ryckmans 1935-2014)。霍克斯教授與閔福德教授合譯清代曹雪芹撰「紅樓夢」,三冊英譯本各於一九七三年、一九七七年、一九八零年問世,為中西文壇不朽盛業。閔福德教授慨賜渠與霍克斯兩人往返信札近一百五十通,多涉翻譯紅樓夢事。若非翁婿倫誼,翻譯或難交融,雙方信札又豈得合璧,克成蒐藏信札之奇遇美談。昔譯家斟酌釋解、苦索字彙、雕琢辭藻,其迂涂未嘗洩露於文字,兩人信札卻記敘甚詳,洵紅學寶庫,譯學史翰。

敝館初蒙白杰明教授(Geremie Barme)見貽業師李克曼教授手澤,近年復獲李克曼教授夫人張涵芳女士慨賜乃夫手稿、著作、朋交信札、文件約七十五件。李克曼教授為起首揭露文革真相之西方學人,其英譯「論語」蜚聲海外,法文著作榮獲獎狀,改編電影,堪稱中西通儒。審視近數十年東學西漸之路程,海外名家以政治文化交輔闡釋中國,李克曼教授、余英時教授堪稱表率。
「東學西漸:三百年中西名家信札、著作暨文物目錄」固嫌闕陋,不足勾描三百年人事學殖於萬一,惟棉力至斯,幾抵際涯,再俟他年,恐亦寸進,爰獻丑同調,信海天外東學亦合馳騰。

Sketch map by Sven A. Hedin illustrating part of his route to Lhasa of Tibet in 1901, on his second Asian expedition (1899-1902). The map shows the location of Camp 44, the journey to Namru where he was stopped by Kamba Bombo, governor of the province, and continuing onward to Naktsang where he was stopped by Hlaje-Tsering. The expedition was then redirected westwards by way of Kashmir to Ladakh. Sketch map was reproduced under the title The Dash for Lhasa in My Life as an Explorer, Chapter XLII Back to High Tibet. Two notebooks used by Prof. P. Ryckmans for Chinese paleography. The first notebook has forty nine pages of writings in French and Chinese. The second notebook has twenty three pages of writings in French and Chinese, inserted are a piece of paper inscribed with French and Chinese, a page of writing in French and Chinese, two pages from Chinese paleography class, a typed letter by Ezra F. Vogel (1930-2020) to Prof. P. Ryckmans, a New Year greeting card from Chiang Yee enclosed with a photograph, and a handwritten tz'u poem by Prof. Jao Tsung-i (1917-2018).

Three notebooks used by Prof. P. Ryckmans between spring and summer of 2014 before he passed away. The first notebook has eight pages of writings in French and Chinese on Classical Chinese literature. The second notebook has eleven pages of writings in English on the Bible and the Church. The third notebook has fifteen pages of writings in French, English and Chinese on Chinese literature and painting, another two cards, a sheet of writings and a photocopy of biographies of ancient Chinese artists inserted.
