Virtual Homage at the Mausoleum of President Chiang Kai-shek

Portrait of President Chiang Kai-shek

Amongst the titans of Modern China, President Chiang Kai-shek is the foremost giant. Amongst the titans of China Past and Future China, President Chiang Kai-shek is just as much a giant. He died on 5 April in the 64th year of the Republic of China,1975, fifty years to this day. During these five decades, the nation’s fortune has risen and fallen, world affairs have been deceitful and unpredictable, people have endured endless tribulations, and terrifying torrents have recurred many times over. Whenever we recall what President Chiang endured, overcame, said, and vowed, they continue to foster our courage and resolution, and guide our track to journey ahead.

For those who remain unwavering in their commitment to a free China — whether living on the mainland, by a distant seashore, or in a diaspora across the five continents — on the death anniversary of President Chiang, they can gaze at the images of his mausoleum, and offer their homages from afar, grieving the growing distance from his noble spirit, despairing the nescience of the mass, lamenting the unresolved state of the nation, and mourning the decay of the homeland.

The accomplishments of President Chiang reverberate and glow in Chinese history: The Northern Expedition that unified China, Suppressing Communist-Banditry that pacified China, Pre-war Modernization that developed China, War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression that saved China, National Constitution that reformed China, Mobilization for the Suppression of Communist Rebellion that secured Free China in Taiwan, relocation of the Central Government that preserved Free China in Taiwan, economic development that fortified Free China in Taiwan, and the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement that will ultimately rejuvenate the whole of China one day.

Reflecting on the struggle between Chinese civilization and foreign invaders in the last one thousand years, both Sung and Ming dynasties fell to foreign occupations. The only exception occurred under President Chiang, who led the nation's military and civilians to victory against the Japanese invaders. Reflecting on the rule by tyrants in the last two thousand years, in ancient China, there was the Ch’in Emperor who burnt books and buried scholars alive. In modern China, there are the Chinese communists who emulate and amplify this devastation ten thousand fold, eradicating proper Chinese script, annihilating the Confucian values of propriety, justice, integrity, and shame. The moment the nation’s cultural lineage was on the verge of severance, it was President Chiang who rallied the people and launched the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement.  Searching through the annals of history, how many can rise as equal? We have not seen any ancient sage in our lifetime, but is not President Chiang a small step away?

The Chinese-Heritage Virtual Museum respectfully presents images of the mausoleum, along with images of newspapers and publications from the 64th year of the Republic of China, to reminisce that rainy and thunderous night of his passing, and the days when the entire nation mourned in sorrow. His coffin has been resting above ground by the lake for fifty years, awaiting burial after the recovery of mainland China. As we pay our homages to President Chiang, we reflect on his last words, we survey this despondent world, and we are left inundated by a barrage of emotions.

In early April in the 65th year of the Republic of China 1976, on the First Death Anniversary of President Chiang Kai-shek, Friends of China from Belgium travelled to Taipei to pay respects at The Mausoleum of President Chiang Kai-shek. They were given golden button pins to wear with the image of President Chiang in relief. These were made by the Belgian sculptor R. Cliquet. This piece was a gift from veteran diplomat Mr. Fu Wei-hsin to Soong Shu-kong.

Three months after the death of President Chiang Kai-shek, Chang Ku-nien, standing committee member of the Executive Committee of the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement, painted this work titled The Eternal President Chiang Kai-shek as tribute.
